We are a small group, who have become fed up with our vibrant community not getting together in an organized fashion.
We believe that the lack of action in our community in response to Darfur, amongst other issues that our community should be engaged in, such as Harper's response to KYOTO and the war in Afghanistan, is a by product of individuals not feeling effectual as individuals because they lack the power of a group to support or discuss their concerns. It it time for Ottawa to begin leading the way in civil society activity. We live in the Capital, yards away from the decision makers in our Country. Lets take advantage of that and get together to discuss and plot how we as a community can use our collective strength.
Currently we are focused on achieving the goal of organizing a rally in front of the Chinese embassy here in Ottawa to demand the end of the Chinese apathetic policy towards Sudan, wherein, Xinhua, China's state-owned news agency, quoted China's President, Mr Hu as saying: "Any solution [in Darfur] needs to respect the sovereignty of Sudan and be based on dialogue." We take the stance that the sovereignty of a nation is guaranteed only insofar as it guarantees the basic Human Rights stipulated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. When a nation-state is unable to ensure these basic rights it is the obligation of the international community to step in and perform their moral duty in defense of rights we hold to be salient for all. We have become tainted in the eyes of the global community due to our lack of consistency in defense of Human Rights. We went into Yugoslavia but left Somalia, Rwanda, and now Sudan untended. This lack of consistency means that in the eyes of many we lack legitimacy as when we claim to enter into a conflict due to Humanitarian reasons the question can always be asked: What makes us different from Somalia, Rwanda and Sudan? The answer to such a question usually reveals self interested motives completely separate from the stated purpose of establishing basic Human Rights.
Let us band together to reestablish Canada as a legitimate humanitarian nation that will defend to the best of its ability and capacity, the rights of human beings across the globe.
Three outstanding people who inspire and guide the morality of our group are shown below: from left to right, Mahatma Ghandi, Stephen Lewis, and Romeo Dellaire.
