Paul Dewar has begun the process of divestment so that Canadian companies doing business with the Sudanese government will be held accountable. We, as a society, cannot demand that China divest or pressure the Sudanese government into stopping the genocide without doing the same ourselves. It is for this reason that we must support the activities of MP's such as Paul Dewar to ensure they have the public support to push through initiative that may not be popular in the business community. But Canada needs to do more. The question is, what more can we do?
China will reject any demand we propose that does not address their increasing need for oil. We have to understand that they need oil and will not be deterred from satisfying their need even when faced with genocide. I believe we have to shame China into action that pushes the Sudanese government to restore stability and human rights without comprimising China's ability to secure Sudanese oil. Let them have the oil, but make them demand an end to the bloodshed.
